Our founder, Andy Pope, can trace his love of live performance all the way back to 6th grade in Copper Beech middle in the suburbs of New York city. While living there with his family, his parents afforded him the opportunity to catch live performances at the Met, on Broadway and Radio City Music Hall. After graduating from that school, his family moved across the country to Bellevue WA, where he spent most of his free time in the Newport Sr High School theater. Yes, he was a theater geek before there was a name for it. He likes to joke that more of his classmates knew him by the nickname "Techie" than knew his real name. High School was followed by college at UW, and after graduation, Andy began to tour the world as a monitor engineer. At times when he was home, he worked on permanent installation projects ranging from small clubs to churches, eventually installing world class PA systems in the Kingdome and Alamo Dome.
As time passed, Andy started to feel that life on the road was not compatible with his desire for a family, so he transitioned from a full time touring engineer to a career in IT, but his passion for live performance never died. He would occasionally pick up an engineering gig and even take a short tour away from home. This led to the founding of SDP Lighting and F/X. With his vast combined live performance and IT experience he was very well positioned for the analog to digital transition that the audio industry was going through. SDP specialized as a small regional Lighting and F/X company, but demand for Andy's audio talent grew and led to the company buying its first PA. To support the larger gigs coming in the company grew and it was beginning to look like Andy would need to join the team full time -- then COVID shut down the industry.
SDP was able to weather that multi-year storm and with recent investment has refreshed most of their equipment.
